Hi Charlie, np. I personally went online on November 26th to find an appointment on January 11th, so it was only 6 weeks in advance. The first time I tried, there were no slots available for me, but I came back every day and three days later there was one. Don't be surprised if you need to set the appointment 2-3 months in advance. If you live in NY, I doubt that Tijuana is the best option. I would assume Canada is faster, but I may be wrong.

Dear Olivier,

To echo Diane's words, thank you for posting this. I'm a Brit living in New York (also on an O1). Just wondering how far in advance of your appointment you booked. I'm just renewing my visa now and am about to do the same and am deciding between the Embassies as to which one to go through. From what I'd heard, renewing through Canada or Mexico was becoming more and more laborious.

Once immigration approves renewal of your H1B and sends you the I-797 form (see your lawyer for how to do that), you need to make an appointment at the Consulate. It is now very easy to do so online at usvisa-mexico.com. I am not sure about H1B (I am on an O1 visa), but for some visas the entire application process, including the appointment, can be online after paying a $8 fee. I believe that for other visas you need to call (the numbers and which case applies to you are on the site).

Since you live in San Diego, there is no point driving really. If I were you, I would park near the border and walk across the border. See this blog for more details.

Thank you for you blog it was very informative. I am Irish living in San Diego on a H1B visa. I need to renew my visa before July. I was just wondering who you contact to make the appointment and how close is the consulate to the boarder. I heard you can just drive to the boarder, cross over and there are US immagration officals there that you can make an appointment with.
